Daniel Pinha

Daniel Pinha graduated in Scenography from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and has a Master's Degree in Set Design from the University of Maryland. He has worked as Art Director and Set Designer for more than twenty years in theater, television and film. In the last 15 years he has developed more than sixty projects in the U.S. for theatre only. Among them, a set design for the Halloween at the White House and the opening parade of The Reach at The Kennedy Center. Daniel has also been nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Set Design. He is currently a theater professor at Loyola University Maryland.
Daniel has promoted workshops and presentations both in U.S. and in Brazil of his award-winning work as a co-author entitled "In the Attic," created in partnership with the artist and professor Leslie Felbain. More recently he was invited to teach a workshop at the World Stage Design 2022, in Calgary, Canada about his project "Storytelling through Models."
His work has allowed for important artistic partnerships. In the United States, Daniel and renowned photographer Carrie Mae Weems have created a multimedia art installation at the Park Avenue Armory in New York. In Brazil, Daniel created the set design for the recent show “Nelson Rodrigues Por Ele Mesmo” and for the graphic design project of the book “Fernanda Montenegro: Itinerário Fotobiográfico”, both with the internationally acclaimed actress Fernanda Montenegro.
The Brazil-United States duality in Daniel's professional training has a strong influence on the way he deals with his projects. He believes that the experiences of his life in different realities made him develop skills that he considers very important in his artistic process. He manages to combine a practical look with a refined, rigorous and updated technique without giving up freedom of expression in his creative development, in which essence presupposes sensitivity and instinct.

Daniel Pinha formado em Cenografia pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), mestre em Cenografia pela University of Maryland e professor da Loyola University Maryland trabalha com cenografia há mais de vinte anos para teatro, televisão e cinema. Há quinze anos morando nos Estados Unidos, ele já desenvolveu, entre outros, mais de sessenta projetos de cenografia no país somente em teatro. Entre outros, destacam-se: uma cenografia para o evento de Halloween na Casa Branca em Washington DC, a parada de abertura do espaço The Reach (Kennedy Center), além da nomeação de melhor cenografia em teatro para o prêmio Helen Hayes Awards in Washington.
Numa outra esfera, ele tem promovido workshops e apresentações do seu premiado trabalho como co-autor intitulado “In the Attic” tanto nos Estados Unidos como no Brasil em parceria com a artista e professora Leslie Felbain. Recentemente Daniel foi convidado para ensinar um workshop no World Stage Design 2022 no Canadá sobre o projeto "Storytelling through Models."
Seu trabalho tem permitido importantes parcerias artísticas. Nos Estados Unidos, Daniel e a renomada fotógrafa Carrie Mae Weems estão atualmente produzindo uma multimídia instalação de arte no Park Avenue Armory em Nova York.
No Brasil, Daniel criou a cenografia para o recente espetáculo “Nelson Rodrigues Por Ele Mesmo” e para o projeto gráfico do livro “Fernanda Montenegro Itinerário Fotobiográfico”, ambos com a atriz Fernanda Montenegro.
A dualidade Brasil-Estados Unidos na sua formação profissional exerce forte influência na sua forma de realizar projetos. Ele acredita que a experiência de vida em diferentes realidades o fez desenvolver aptidões que considera muito importantes no fazer artístico. Ele consegue combinar um olhar prático aliado a uma técnica apurada, rigorosa e atualizada sem abdicar da liberdade de expressão no seu processo criativo, cuja essência pressupõe sensibilidade e instinto.
